El libro fue publicado con facilidad porque sus padres son ricos de la alta sociedad de Nueva York en el negocio editorial. En el momento en que leí esto, tenía grandes sueños de convertirme en un escritor joven y exitoso, así que quería ver si el niño tenía talento o si solo tenía dinero y acceso.
Me gustó leer el libro, pero no estoy seguro de cuánto talento estaba involucrado. No creo que haya escrito nada desde entonces. Quiero decir, tal vez es talentoso, como lo son tantos escritores inéditos, pero no tengo dudas de que esta historia aún se guardaría en el ordenador de alguien si sus padres no hubieran estado en este ámbito.
No sé mucho sobre cómo eran las escuelas secundarias estadounidenses a principios de la década de 2000, pero este autor hizo parecer que a todos los niños ricos les importaba el dinero, las drogas, las fiestas, el alcohol y el sexo.
Se nos cuenta la historia de una semana entera desde la perspectiva de muchos personajes, sin embargo, con la excepción del personaje principal, cada personaje se sintió como el anterior con la única diferencia de ser su situación. Eso fue lo único que les impidió mezclarse entre sí.
Lo único que les importaba a estos niños ricos era cuándo iban a obtener su próxima droga y cuándo podían tener relaciones sexuales con alguien. El autor trata de retratarlos como niños ricos solitarios que no tienen amor o atención de sus padres que están demasiado ocupados ganando dinero, pero eso falla completamente. Estos personajes ni siquiera se sienten seres humanos.
El personaje principal cuyo nombre es Mike es el querido traficante de drogas (su nombre de trabajo es White Mike, que es completamente estúpido y no protege su identidad, especialmente cuando trabaja con personas que lo conocen). Está tomando un año de diferencia antes de Uni y pasa su tiempo vendiendo drogas. Cómo logró esconderse de la policía, no lo sé. Es bastante abierto al respecto y no parece pensar que alguien lo delataría. White Mike es retratado como este niño genio que lo hace bien sin intentarlo y es muy directo con sus opiniones. No consume drogas (un hecho que se dice tantas veces), pero no encuentra problemas para venderlas a niños de su misma edad. Vive solo porque su padre está demasiado ocupado con el trabajo. En otras palabras, aquí tenemos un niño rico, inteligente y antisocial que está solo. Sí, Mike blanco está solo. Su boletín de calificaciones no es muy diferente de otros estudiantes y las personas que lo rodean son generalmente amables con él. Tal vez estoy siendo duro, pero nunca entendemos por qué decidió vender drogas. No solo haces eso porque estás aburrido. Hay una razón y nunca se nos da eso. Estar solo hace que sea más probable que tome drogas pero no las venda.
Continuando, la mayoría de estos niños a pesar de pasar la mayor parte de su tiempo bebiendo y consumiendo drogas son excelentes en la escuela. Tienen becas y cartas de aceptación y lo que no. No estoy tratando de decir que las personas que beben o consumen drogas no pueden sobresalir en la escuela. No, estoy confundido en cuanto a cómo se destacan. En toda la semana nadie estudió ni una vez. Simplemente lo hacen muy bien, pero la forma en que hablan y piensan no replica los supuestos años 90 que están recibiendo. Un gran ejemplo es cuando un estudiante dice que quiere ir a la medicina, pero las únicas clases que está tomando son Molecular bio, latín, inglés e historia. Ahora, no sé cómo funcionan las escuelas estadounidenses, pero estoy bastante seguro de que necesitas más que eso si quieres estudiar medicina, específicamente química. Es un detalle menor, pero todo este libro está tan confuso que destaca.
Los personajes, como he dicho, son muy superficiales porque el autor no se tomó el tiempo para desarrollarlos. También presenta personajes que no tienen impacto en la historia y dan estereotipos realmente malos a diferentes grupos de minorías. Por ejemplo, mujeres japonesas que tienen pies pequeños. No sé qué tuvo que ver eso con la historia.
La peor parte de esta historia fue que hay un personaje que conoces desde el principio configurado para ser esta persona realmente espeluznante en mal estado. Sabes que algo malo va a suceder involucrándolos, pero nunca se da por qué son así. Son solo el personaje del libro de texto «malvado». Y cuando ocurre el clímax, es desordenado. Nada tiene sentido por qué esta persona está haciendo lo que está haciendo y simplemente termina en esa nota. Nadie es amonestado o castigado por violar la ley. La historia de nadie se concluye. Solo clímax y una breve reflexión al azar y no tiene impacto en la historia.

The book was published with ease because his parents are rich New York socialites in the publishing business. At the time when I read this I had great dreams of becoming a young, successful writer, so I wanted to see if the kid had talent or if he just had money and access.
I did like reading the book, but I’m not sure how much talent was involved. I don’t believe he’s written anything since. I mean, maybe he is talented, as so many unpublished writers are, but I have no doubt that this story would still be saved on someone’s computer had his parents not been in the field.
I don’t know much about what American high schools were like back in early 2000s but this author made it seem as if all rich kids cared about was money, drugs, parties, alcohol, and sex.
We are told the story of an entire week from the perspective of many characters, yet, with the exception of the main character, every character felt like the previous one with the only difference being their situation. That was the only thing that kept them from blending into one another.
All these rich kids cared about was when they are going to get their next drug and when they can have sex with someone. The author tries to portray them as just lonely rich kids who have no love or attention from their parents who are too busy making money, but it completely fails at that. These characters don’t even feel like human beings.
The main character whose name is Mike is the beloved drug dealer (his work name is White Mike which is completely stupid and doesn’t protect your identity especially when you work with people who know you). He is taking a year gap before Uni and spends his time selling drugs. How he managed to hide from the police, I don’t know. He’s pretty open about it and doesn’t seem to think anyone would rat out on him. White Mike is portrayed as this genius kid who does well without trying and is very blunt about his opinions. He doesn’t do drugs (a fact told so many times) but finds no problems in selling it to kids his own age. He lives alone because his father is too busy with work. In other words, here we have an intelligent, antisocial rich kid who is lonely. Yes, White Mike is lonely. His report card is not that much different from other students and people around him are generally nice towards him. Maybe I’m being harsh but we never get an understanding of why he decided to sell drugs. You don’t just do that because you’re bored. There is a reason and we’re never given that. Being lonely makes it more likely that he would take drugs but not sell them.
Moving on, most of these kids despite spending most of their time drinking and doing drugs excel in school. They have scholarships and acceptance letters and what not. I’m not trying to say that people who drink and or do drugs can’t excel in school. No, I’m confused as to how they are excelling. In the entire week no one studied once. They just do very well, yet the manner in which they speak and think doesn’t replicate the supposed 90s they are getting. A great example, is when a student says he wants to go into medicine but the only classes he’s taking are Molecular bio, Latin, English, and History. Now, I don’t know how American schools work, but I’m pretty sure you need more than that if you want to go into medicine, specifically chemistry. It’s a minor detail but this whole book is so jumbled that it stands out.
Characters, as I’ve said, are so shallow because the author didn’t take the time to flesh them out. He also puts in characters that have no impact to the story and give really bad stereotypes to different groups of minorities . For example, Japanese women having small feet. I don’t know what that had to do with the story at all.
The worst part of this story was that there is one character who you know from the beginning set up to be this really creepy messed up person. You know something bad it going to happen involving them but why they are like that is never given. They’re just the textbook «evil» character. And when the climax occurs, it’s just messy. Nothing makes sense as to why this person is doing what they are doing and it just ends on that note. Nobody gets admonished or punished for breaking the law. Nobody’s story gets concluded. Just climax and a short random reflection and makes no impact to the story.
