Me ha gustado más la segunda parte del libro que la primera, su estancia en Alemania y su hermano Aguatín en el hotel Petrus, obras como la «caca en el sombrero», debe leerse entre líneas y siempre nos quedará Carol más alla de un juego de té y las sorpresas paternales. Me gustó más que el primero. Rufo Batalla, el personaje creado por Eduardo Mendoza (Barcelona, 1943) en El rey recibe, su anterior novela, apenas para por Barcelona, aunque es oriundo de la ciudad, como el propio escritor. Esto es porque el personaje, que ahora repite en El negociado del yin y el yang (Seix Barral), la segunda parte de una trilogía, es un trasunto poco disfrazado del autor. La trayectoria del héroe, arrastrado de acá para allá por el excéntrico príncipe Tadeusz Maria Clementij Tukuulo, empeñado en reconquistar el trono de la antigua Livonia, un país ya desaparecido, es la suya. Eliminando, claro, el disparate que tanto ha trabajado el novelista. «Su visión es interesante», vivido desde siempre fuera. Creo que esta visión que algo puede aportar, porque es distinta, del que ha estado siempre aquí».
El príncipe Tukuulo, motor de la acción, arrastra a Rufo Batalla hasta el Lejano Oriente. Igual que el personaje vive en Nueva York, Rufo se acerca a Corea, a Japón, a Vietnam. «El viaje a Oriente no tiene ni pies ni cabeza, pero les lleva a ver todo el Sudeste Asiático, una zona arrasada por la guerra, pobrísima», señala. «Y una zona muy importante también políticamente: Vietnam, Corea… Permite hablar también de cómo aquel momento de conflicto va a dar lugar al turismo sexual, que se ha convertido en una de las grandes industrias de nuestro tiempo». De telón de fondo, apunta, la globalización y me pareció una obra interesante.
El peculiar emplazamiento geográfico de Barcelona, que causa buena impresión al forastero, es uno de sus principales defectos para quienes viven allí. Enmarcada entre una espaciosa franja de mar y una suave y diminuta cordillera, Barcelona viene definida por sus límites. Por esta causa, el barcelonés vive encajonado y, aunque finge ignorar su discapacidad, por más que se apresure, nunca saldrá del corto perímetro de su demarcación. A menudo un tráfico caótico y unos transportes públicos insuficientes le hacen creer que soporta los problemas propios de una gran ciudad, pero esta reflexión sólo es un falso consuelo: comparada con una aldea, Barcelona es una gran ciudad, pero comparada con una gran ciudad, sólo es un reducto provinciano, hipertrofiado, endogámico y pretencioso.
No había duda de que en España estaban sucediendo cosas trascendentales. Las alusiones al pasado sonaban a una retórica no tanto hueca como desfasada: el mundo había cambiado y España formaba parte de aquel mundo nuevo, en el que las fantasías autoritarias y los lemas pomposos no tenían cabida.
Te fuiste de un país y has vuelto a otro. En la España de hoy, la de Su Majestad el Rey Juan Carlos, sólo trabajan los tontos. ¿Por qué? Porque los parámetros han mutado. Antes todo era producción y producción; ahora, todo es negocio y nada más que negocio. Te pondré un ejemplo y lo entenderás en seguida.
