El señor de las muñecas y otros cuentos de terror contiene seis relatos, la mayoría de los cuales encajan mejor -en mi opinión- dentro de la intriga o el suspense que en el terror propiamente dicho. Ninguna de estas seis excelentes historias me ha decepcionado ni dejado indiferente.
Los relatos, escritos con un estilo sobrio y austero, no esconden grandes giros inesperados. Oates me condujo por un camino con suficientes pistas para que con el simple hecho de estar atenta intuyera dónde estaba y hacia dónde me dirigía, ni siquiera un narrador poco honesto consigue engañar pues desde el principio es patente que esconde algo. Así, el lector no es cautivo de un remolino de sorpresas. No, el lector sigue el destino natural de la historia hasta llegar a un final que se cierra en el culmen de la narración, un desenlace construido con incertidumbre y certeza a partes iguales.
El señor de las muñecas y otros cuentos de terror son relatos donde se describe la vileza y donde el protagonista, y el lector, será consciente de ello. No existe el factor sorpresa. Tampoco en el final de los cuentos existirá ningún giro que dé un vuelco al relato excepto en uno de ellos. En el resto, será el final consecuente a lo que nos ha descrito durante todo el cuento porque, sencillamente, no puede ser de otra manera. Así de simple. O de grande, porque hacer sentir a un lector congoja, aunque éste sea consciente de la fatalidad del desenlace, es muy difícil.
-El señor de las muñecas: un chico se dedica desde pequeño a coleccionar muñecas, muñecas que… encuentra… Este relato, que da nombre a la colección, es el único que creo que podría considerarse de terror, aun así para mí es más un cuento de suspense. Al poco de empezar sabemos, si no se es muy despistado, lo que sucede realmente, pero como dije, Oates ya nos ha agarrado de la mano y no nos soltará hasta el final.
-Soldado: un hombre blanco ha matado a un chico negro asegurando que fue en defensa propia; los jurados no tienen fácil llegar a un veredicto y la sociedad está dividida, para unos el hombre blanco es un héroe, para otros un asesino racista que ha de morir, aunque sea linchado. Como la anterior, es una historia narrada en primera persona donde el lector está en manos de su narrador. Una historia de conflictos raciales y sociales, miedo, ira, venganza, mentiras.
-Accidente por arma de fuego. Una investigación: una mujer recuerda lo que sucedió cuando tenía catorce años y su profesora preferida, obligada a ausentarse de la localidad durante unos días, le encarga que cuide de su casa. Este relato es quizás el que menos me gustó, y aun así he releído algún pasaje. Una historia sobre la familia, las mentiras, el pasado… Interesante.
-Ecuatorial: un matrimonio está de viaje en las islas Galápagos y la mujer, Audrey, empieza a creer que, quizá, su marido intenta matarla, que quizá tenga una amante, que quizá quiera su dinero, que quizá… muchos quizá empiezan a apoderarse de su mente. Aunque quizá me haya parecido un poco largo para lo que la autora quería contar, lo disfruté mucho, sobre todo por los temas secundarios en la historia (y no los principales -confianza, matrimonio…-) como las referencias a la ecología y conservación de las islas (que se tratan solo de pasada).
-Mamaíta: una adolescente bajita, rellenita, con problemas con su madre, no se adapta a su nueva vida tras una mudanza, pero un día traba amistad con otra muchacha cuyo padre es muy agradable y simpático, su amiga parece tener una familia ideal. Posiblemente el único relato, después del primero, que podría llevar la etiqueta “terror”. Me ha gustado mucho, juega con la idea del hombre del saco, miedos infantiles que pueden olvidarse al llegar a cierta edad. El final todavía me tiene impactada.
-Misterios S. A.: un hombre acude a una librería con la intención de asesinar a su propietario y poder así hacerse con ese negocio. Este cuento es un pequeño regalo para los amantes de los libros, y más aún para los amantes de misterios y detectives.
The doll master and other tales of terror contains six stories, most of which fit better – in my opinion – in the intrigue or suspense than in the terror itself. None of these six excellent stories have disappointed me or left me indifferent.
The stories, written in a sober and austere style, do not hide great unexpected turns. Oates led me along a path with enough clues so that with the simple fact of being aware I knew where I was and where I was going, not even an unreliable narrator is able to deceive because it is clear from the beginning that it hides something. Thus, the reader is not captive of a whirlwind of surprises. No, the reader follows the natural destiny of the story until arriving at an end that closes in the culmination of the narration, an outcome constructed with uncertainty and certainty in equal parts.
The lord of the dolls and other tales of terror are stories describing the vileness and where the protagonist, and the reader, will be aware of it. There is no such factor. Neither at the end of the stories will there be any twist that turns the story except one of them. In the rest, it will be the end consistent with what he has described throughout the story because, simply, it can not be otherwise. It’s that simple. Or big, because to make a reader feel sorry, even if he is aware of the fatality of the outcome, is very difficult. Welcome to a bizarre world.
-The doll master: a boy is dedicated since childhood to collect dolls, dolls that … find … This story, which gives name to the collection, is the only one I think could be considered of terror, yet for me it is more a thriller. Shortly after we started, we know, if it is not too absent-minded, what actually happens, but as I said, Oates has already taken us by the hand and will not let us go until the end.
-Soldier: a white man has killed a black boy assuring that it was in self-defense; the jurors do not have easy to reach a verdict and the society is divided, for some the white man is a hero, for others a racist murderer who will die, even if it is lynched. Like the previous one, it is a story told in the first person where the reader is in the hands of its narrator. A history of racial and social conflicts, fear, anger, revenge, lies.
– Accident by firearm. An investigation: a woman remembers what happened when she was fourteen and her favorite teacher, obliged to leave the town for a few days, orders her to take care of her house. This story is perhaps the least I liked, and yet I have reread some passage. A story about family, lies, the past … Interesting.
-Ecuatorial: a marriage is on the Galapagos Islands, and the woman, Audrey, begins to believe that perhaps her husband tries to kill her, that perhaps she has a mistress, that she may want her money, that perhaps … many may begin to take over of his mind. Although it may have seemed a little long for what the author wanted to tell, I enjoyed it a lot, especially for the secondary themes in history (and not the main ones – trust, marriage …) as references to the ecology and conservation of the islands (which are treated only in passing).
– Mamaíta: a teenager short, plump, troubled with her mother, does not adapt to her new life after a move, but one day she becomes friends with another girl whose father is very nice and nice, her friend seems to have an ideal family. Possibly the only story, after the first one, that could carry the label «terror». I liked it a lot, play with the idea of the man from the sack, childish fears that can be forgotten when they reach a certain age. The end still has me impacted.
Mystery Company: a man goes to a bookstore with the intention of murdering its owner and thus be able to get that business. This story is a small gift for lovers of books, and even more for lovers of mysteries and detectives.
David, earth planet , knopfler and a humble man
