El problema de este tipo de libros es que son previsibles, libro intenso, no se puede negar. Todo es vertiginoso y página a página se va desengranando el misterio que hay tras esa llamada nocturna que pone la vida de todos los protagonistas del revés.
Todo empieza con una llamada a media noche (como bien reza el título de la novela), en ella la hija de la protagonista del libro le pide que viaje hasta Sevilla (donde está haciendo un intercambio universitario) porque la han detenido y está acusada de asesinato.
Justo después, sin pensarlo demasiado, la gran protagonista del libro; su madre. Vuela hasta la capital española y empieza a desentrañar una oscura realidad que jamás habría imaginado. ¿Su hija es la verdadera responsable del asesinato de un compañero de la universidad? En principio todo apunta a que sí; obviamente. Conforme avanza la historia, la cosa empieza a tomar unos derroteros muy distintos; bastante imprevisibles la verdad.
En algunos momentos es un poco telefilm de esos que ponen en antena3 los domingos, pero bueno… tampoco es un detalle que desmerezca la lectura de esta atrayendo historia llena de engaños, giros argumentales y acción que se cuece poquito a poco.
Lo más interesante es Emma ha sido detenida por el brutal asesinato de un joven el último día de la Feria de Abril. Jennifer viaja a Sevilla convencida de la inocencia de su hija y de que todo ha sido un error. Está dispuesta a ayudar a Emma con todo lo que necesario, pagando a los mejores abogados y detectives privados para liberarla. Pero pronto comenzará a descubrir que la versión de Emma tiene contradicciones y descubrirá facetas inquietantes de su hija que la harán dudar sobre su inocencia.
Jennifer pensaba que era la madre perfecta y que tenía una relación sincera y directa con sus hijos, en el caso de Emma, «siempre había creído que conocía bien a mi hija, pero… La situación de Emma provocará también un terremoto emocional en su madre y sacará a la luz la fragilidad de su matrimonio convirtiéndose este episodio en una oportunidad para destruir o salvar su vida familiar».
La novela está ambientada en una ciudad de Sevilla reconocible algo de agradecer ante los disparates de montones de escritores norteamericanos y cuidado con los amigos de intercambio, las drogas y cuchillos… o puede que suene vuestro teléfono y cuando con las fotos que aparecen en el correo.

At times it is a little telefilm of those that put on antenna3 on Sundays, but hey … it is not a detail that detracts from reading this story, full of tricks, plot twists and action that is cooked little by little.
