Me ha parecido una gran novela que sabe mantener la angustia de la trama y eso en los tiempos de mercadotecnia que corren es magnífico leyéndose en un suspiro.
Anne y Marco están cenando en casa de sus vecinos Cynthia y Graham. Cada media hora uno de ellos va a su casa a echar un vistazo a su bebé de seis meses Cora y, mientras están en la casa de los vecinos, la vigilan con un vigilabebés que tiene estropeada la cámara, así que pueden oír a la niña pero no verla. La canguro les ha fallado en el último momento, la cena estaba programada con antelación, Cynthia no soporta a los bebés y Marco insistió en que no pasaba nada. Pero sí pasó: cuando Anne y Marco volvieron a casa Cora no estaba en su cuna.
Por supuesto, llaman inmediatamente a la policía quien acude al hogar familiar y busca alguna pista: no la hay. Cora ha desaparecido sin dejar rastro.
En “La pareja de al lado” se plantea la peor pesadilla de unos padres: la desaparición de su hijo. Encima, teniendo ellos parte de responsabilidad porque habían dejado a la niña sola con solo seis meses. Es verdad que estaban en la casa de al lado, pared con pared, que la vigilaban con un vigilabebés y que cada media hora iban a echarle un vistazo; pero es un hecho que la dejaron sola y que ha desaparecido y ya os podéis imaginar los remordimientos que tienen.
El punto de partida no puede ser más interesante y también lo es la deriva que va a ir tomando la historia. “La pareja de al lado” es un thriller psicológico en toda regla donde el lector andará siempre comiéndose las uñas, sospechando de todo el que se menea, planteándose mil hipótesis para descartarlas al minuto siguiente… Es algo manido decir lo que voy a decir pero hay que hacerlo porque es la forma más grafica de expresarlo: engancha de mala manera. Si lo empiezas estás perdido porque tendrás la necesidad compulsiva de seguir leyendo hasta el final. Encima, es que la lectura no cuesta nada: las páginas pasan sin que casi te des cuenta, no requiere esfuerzo (el esfuerzo será tener que dejarlo si no os queda otro remedio).
La autora se vale tanto de lo angustioso de la historia: nada puede haber peor que perder a un hijo y encima siendo éste aún un bebé de pecho, como de unos personajes que no pueden calificarse de otra cosa que de potentes. Y es que tanto la madre como el padre van a tener muchas cosas que decir. También los abuelos, que son millonarios, por lo que el móvil económico no puede descartarse. No os voy a hablar de personajes, claro está, porque en estas novelas todos son sospechosos y no quiero dar la más mínima pista pero sí que tengo que decir que me encanta cómo la autora ha dibujado a los protagonistas: su mundo interior, sus miedos, sus angustias, sus recelos… Están trazados perfectamente, de tal modo que el lector puede verlos y meterse en su piel sintiendo su angustia.
Ya os imaginaréis que a lo largo de la novela va a haber muchas sorpresas y mil vueltas y revueltas. No se puede dar nada por supuesto y hasta el último momento tienes que estar en tensión porque no paran de pasar cosas, de surgir nuevas informaciones que le dan la vuelta a todo lo que sabías y cambiar de sospechoso…, de verdad que es tremendo. ¿Ha podido hacerle algo Anne a la niña? ¿O Marco? ¿O ambos juntos? La familia siempre es la primera sospechosa en estos casos pero, ¿es posible que haya sido alguno de ellos con lo angustiados que están? ¿o precisamente lo están por haberle hecho algo? ¿Y los vecinos? ¿qué tienen éstos que decir? O ¿es posible que alguien, enterado del montón de dinero que tienen los abuelos de Cora, la haya secuestrado para pedir un rescate? O ¿puede haber otro motivo para habérsela llevado? Nos preguntaremos estas cuestiones y muchas más a medida que vayamos avanzando en la lectura, cambiando de respuesta prácticamente en cada párrafo.
El libro es muy visual y cinematográfico (el típico que si, dentro de unos meses, te enteras de que se han comprado los derechos para hacer una película, no te extraña nada). El lector puede no sólo ver y oir lo que está pasando sino incluso oler y sentir la angustia de la situación. Vamos a formar parte de la historia y por eso en algunos momentos puede llegar a ser un poco angustioso (y más para los que somos padres). Es imposible no ponerse en el lugar de Anne y Marco y vivir con ellos su angustia y sus miedos.
El estilo es el típico de los thrillers: mucho ritmo, mucho diálogo, frases sencillas y cortas, sorpresas constantes, intriga e interés creciente, una facilidad pasmosa de lectura… Será un narrador omnisciente quien nos cuente todo lo que va pasando. Un acierto pues, si bien focaliza más en Anne que en ninguna otra persona, al contar la historia desde fuera también nos puede dar más puntos de vista de los hechos, no sólo el de la madre sino también el del padre, el inspector encargado del caso, etc…
Y así llegamos al final. Y, cuando todo está resuelto, hay una última escena que te deja con la boca abierta. A mí me ha gustado ese final final aunque también me hubiera gustado el primer final. De hecho, quizás sin la última escena me hubiera gustado más pero entiendo que el último giro de tuerca viene a cuento, es coherente y lógico; lo que pasa es que me dejaba más tranquila el anterior.
Para finalizar
La pareja de al lado si os gustan los thrillers psicológicos, los libros page-turner, los libros que no puedes parar de leer, éste os va a encantar. Un thriller en el que hay continuamente sorpresas, en el que vas descubriendo algunas cosas y parece que ya sabes por dónde van a ir los tiros pero enseguida te das cuenta de que no, de que hay mucho más que contar. Una novela muy intensa, con mucho ritmo, que me ha encantado donde los celos por perder a la hija (Anne) de los millonarios por Marco Conti, un humano normal, tiene una empresa de software en horas bajas pagada por los padres de ella, Cynthia la vecina explosiva, unas relaciones sexuales que culpan a Marco y unas grabaciones en las que se ve a Marco con la pequeña (Cora) y por encima de todo más allá de la amiga del colegio de Anne, el inspector Rasbach, sin duda un personaje muy bien perfilado… más allá de depresiones postparto y posibles chantajes.

In «The couple next door» poses the worst nightmare of parents: the disappearance of his son. Above, taking them part of responsibility because they had left the girl alone with only six months. It is true that they were in the house next door, wall to wall, that they were watching her with a baby monitor and that every half hour they were going to take a look at her; but it is a fact that they left her alone and that she has disappeared and you can already imagine the remorse they have.
The starting point can not be more interesting and so is the drift that is going to take the story. «The couple next door» is a full-fledged psychological thriller where the reader will always be fingernails, suspecting all who wiggle, posing a thousand hypotheses to discard the next minute … It’s a bit hated to say what I’m going to say but you have to do it because it is the most graphic way to express it: it engages badly. If you start it, you are lost because you will have the compulsive need to continue reading until the end. On top of that, reading does not cost anything: the pages go by without you almost realizing it, it does not require effort (the effort will be to have to leave it if you do not have another remedy).
The author uses so much of the anguish of history: nothing can be worse than losing a child and even being still a baby at the breast, as characters who can not be described as anything but powerful. And it is that both the mother and the father are going to have many things to say. Also grandparents, who are millionaires, so the economic mobile can not be ruled out. I’m not going to talk about characters, of course, because in these novels everyone is suspicious and I do not want to give the slightest clue but I do have to say that I love how the author has drawn the protagonists: their inner world, their fears , their anguish, their misgivings … They are traced perfectly, in such a way that the reader can see them and get into their skin feeling their anguish.
You will imagine that throughout the novel there will be many surprises and a thousand twists and turns. You can not take anything for granted and until the last moment you have to be in tension because things do not stop happening, new information arises that turn everything you knew and change suspect … really is tremendous. Could Anne have done something to the girl? Or Marco? Or both together? The family is always the first suspect in these cases but, is it possible that it was one of them with how distressed they are? Or are they precisely because they did something to him? And the neighbors? What do these have to say? Or is it possible that someone, aware of the pile of money that Cora’s grandparents have, has kidnapped her to ask for a ransom? Or can there be another reason to have taken it? We will ask ourselves these questions and many more as we move forward in reading, changing the answer practically in each paragraph.
The book is very visual and cinematic (the typical one if, in a few months, you learn that you have bought the rights to make a movie, you do not miss anything). The reader can not only see and hear what is happening but even smell and feel the anguish of the situation. We are going to be part of the story and that’s why at times it can be a bit anguishing (and more so for those of us who are parents). It is impossible not to put yourself in the place of Anne and Marco and live with them their anguish and their fears.
The style is typical of thrillers: a lot of rhythm, a lot of dialogue, simple and short phrases, constant surprises, intrigue and growing interest, an astonishing ease of reading … It will be an omniscient narrator who tells us everything that is happening. A success then, although it focuses more on Anne than on any other person, by telling the story from the outside it can also give us more points of view of the facts, not only the mother’s but also the father’s, the inspector in charge of the case, etc …
And so we come to the end. And, when everything is solved, there is one last scene that leaves you with your mouth open. I liked that final but I also would have liked the first final. In fact, perhaps without the last scene I would have liked more but I understand that the last turn of the screw comes to mind, it is coherent and logical; What happens is that the previous one left me more calm.
To end
The couple next door if you like psychological thrillers, page-turner books, books that you can not stop reading, this one will love you. A thriller in which there are continually surprises, in which you discover some things and it seems that you already know where the shots are going to go but then you realize that no, there is much more to tell. A very intense novel, with a lot of rhythm, that I loved where the jealousy to lose the daughter (Anne) of the millionaires by Marco Conti, a normal human, has a software company in low hours paid by her parents, Cynthia the explosive neighbor, sex that blames Marco and some recordings in which Marco is seen with the child (Cora) and above all beyond the friend of Anne’s school, Inspector Rasbach, no doubt a character well profiled … beyond postpartum depressions and possible blackmail.
