Esta es la nueva novela de este escritor británico que debo decir me gusta bastante, es un escritor que escribe sobre aspectos cotidianos de nuestra sociedad en novelas como «fiebre en las gradas», «alta fidelidad» y en esta sin tomar como referencia la música o el fútbol nos lleva a las comedias de la televisión británica de la década de los 60, nos adentra en el mundo de miss Blackpool, Bárbara Parker, pasa de una chica de provincias a ir a Londres, empieza vendiendo cosméticos y cuando entra en las comedias, es una mujer exuberante, empieza a escalar a la cúspide, por cierto el contrapunto lo pone su padre como su tía y en el mundo del espectáculo la buscan otro nombre como Sophie Straw.
A través de diferentes obras nos cuenta los sin sabores más allá de los escenarios y el mundo perfecto de las comedias televisivas.
Esto vincula como se conocieron ciertos guionistas en una comisaría, las relaciones personales son mucho más oscuras, el ejemplo es el de Barbara (y Jim), donde ambos toman caminos diferentes, más allá de la maternidad o quizás por ello en un Londres de cambias frenéticos con «swinging London».
A todo ello Barbara embarazada encuentra en Dennis su amor, diálogos son muy mordaces, la conversación con su madre y buscar una serie como todos quieren a Sophie y está embarazada. Se busca un recambio como todo el mundo quiere a Jackie, el problema de los jóvenes es que pronto quieren hacerse mayores y además el boicot a la novela de Bill «diario de un chico del Soho». El libro, al parecer, iba a tener un gran éxito, o cuando menos todo el éxito que podía lograr cuando la mitad de las librerías de Londres no iban a tenerlo en sus escaparates y la mayoría de los periódicos no iban a dedicarle críticas ni reseñas. El director literario del Daily Express, por ejemplo, había telefoneado a Michael Braun para decirle que su periódico iba a hacer caso omiso no sólo de este libro sino también de todos aquellos que Braun pudiera publicar en el futuro. Pero el New Statesman había llamado a Bill «talento descollante, ardiente y obsceno», y hasta The Spectator había dicho que «el lector de mente abierta encontraría en él mucho que admirar». Tony se sentía a un tiempo cercano a la novela y alejado de ella; y también se sentía culpable, por hacerle perder el tiempo a Bill con cuartos de baño que se inundaban y cosas por el estilo.
Los años pasan y se ponen hablar en referencia a una obra de teatro, los tiempos pasan, hablan sobre la boda del hijo de Bárbara, las bodas gays y en el estreno de la obra son reconocidos por sus papeles en Bárbara (y Jim) donde una cosa es clara y no muere pese a generaciones venideras, son animales de escena que se consideran útiles pese a la edad.
Sin ser su mejor novela es una interesante obra sobre el homenaje a comedias de la BBC, en una sociedad británica cambiante y un Londres frenético.
