A través de las relaciones entre Ganus un mayordomo, Stephena, una chica guapa pero que va tentando como Eva con una manzana envenenada, además su hermosa hermana Kathyanne es igualmente la musa de George, otra persona que está preñado por su belleza medio blanca y negra pero que tiene 17 años. Ganus cuando sale de trabajar se encuentra con las bromas racistas de los blancos, en una novela que hila magníficamente en las tensiones raciales como sólo él sabe hacer.
En la ciudad de Estherville se masca la racialidad, la tensión y el diálogo entre Kathyanne, cuando va a trabajar con una nueva familia Madgie, quien no la pagan por sus servicios, cree que el cambio de familia es por otros motivos, a cada hoja el relato narrativo te atrapa en estos problemas sociales, más allá de los sentimientos humanos. La narración de Ganus, el doctor English y el vendedor de bicicletas Hutto, es maravillosa, pero la tensión se palpa haciendo recados a la señora Vernice y con un bourbon para nada redentor…, vender hielo, poner trampas para coger conejos, venderlos y sacar un dinero pero Mozelle la mujer de Burgess y con un hacha y con la única culpa de ser de raza negra, fue víctima de las mentiras de su mujer blanca.
Mientras la esperanza nos llega con Kathyanne y su hermosa hija que va a atender el doctor Plowden, donde se verá recompensado por un matrimonio de amor con Henry Beck. Sin duda una gran novela donde los sentimientos vuelven a tomar forma en otra magnífica narración ambientada en ese maravilloso lugar que el dixie.
