Esta novela que cuando fue publicada no tuvo mucho éxito, al no gustar lo que contaba al pueblo alemán, me parece una gran novela, aterradora, terrorífica y donde se explica la hora que pasa desde el bombardeo de una ciudad alemana, pero pensando lo que piensan los aviadores como lo que se siente en los refugios, es una novela atroz y recomendadísima.

La súbita irrupción del infierno en un día de verano. Represalia es la cruda descripción del horror desencadenado por el ataque aéreo a una ciudad alemana en julio de 1944, el relato preciso de lo que ocurre durante sesenta y nueve minutos en el interior de los aviones atacantes y en los refugios antiaéreos o en los sótanos enterrados bajo los escombros, la crónica de lo que pasa en las calles bajo una lluvia de bombas.
Represalia se publicó por primera vez en 1956, y se dio de bruces con la incomprensión de la crítica y de los lectores: el libro avivaba recuerdos en una época en que los alemanes preferían concentrarse en el presente y el futuro del país. Está considerada una de las mejores novelas sobre esa locura que es la guerra.
